Issue 13 Announced
August 27, 2008; Dark Insanity
So details on Issue 13 were finally announced a few days ago. It's been about time, considering that Issue 12 was announced way back in March, or almost six months ago.

Anyway, the main selling of point of Issue 13: Architect is the new Mission Architect feature. This will be really fun to play around with, as you get to choose from any of the thousands of maps available, enemy types, set a half dozen objectives, set NPCs to rescue or to fight with you, and a mess load of other stuff. Plus you get to pick the contact that gives the mission, and all and any text that's said throughout your mission or story arc. Lots of customization options there, and City of Heroes has a lot of creative people playing it, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what custom arcs get made out there, as well as making my own. Particularly makin' an arc or two that fit in with my own character's background stories, as well as within City of Heroes' canon.

The next bullet point is the introduction of "Day Jobs" for your characters. Basically, wherever you logout at, when you log back in, you gain a bonus based on where you were. So, say, if you were at City Hall when you logged out, you might gain some bonus Influence. If you were at the hospital, you might have a bonus to health regeneration for a little while after you log back in. Not too big a deal, but it's an alright concept, though I doubt it will effect people substantially enough to base your whole login-logout schedule around it or anything. So I'll be interested in seeing where that goes.

The next big thing is the introduction of two new powersets: Shields for Tankers, Scrappers, and Brutes, and Pain Domination, a villainous version of Empathy, for Corruptors and Masterminds. A shield set is something a lot of people have been asking for for a long time, and I'll definitely be checking it out. I'm also just really interested to see how the set the plays, and what it's strong points are; just, basically, what the powers will be and do. There's some real potential for a really cool set. As for Pain Domination, it was only a matter of time before they found a way to fit Empathy over in City of Villains, so there's no real surprise there. Though I'll still be interested to see how they changed the FX, and how the powers work, to make them more "villainous."

The last couple of things include some new Cimerora story arcs and missions, which will probably be a "run once and done deal" kind of thing, and a new "Merit Rewards" system. This basically seems like a Vanguard Merits system that has been applied to the entire game, in that whenever you complete big stuff, like story arcs and task forces, you are rewarded Merits that can be used to purchase recipes or enhancements directly. So, meh. More stuff for me and you, and more inflation for the market, I guess.

There's a few other minor stuff, as well: new invention sets, "zone refinements" (I'll be interested in hearing more about that), the expected new costume parts, and the ability to respec your Patron Power Pool if you're a high-level villain. Cool, cool.

It's looking like Issue 13 is shaping up to be a pretty good chunk of content, and I'm really looking forward to experimenting with the Mission Architect and the Shields set, as well as hearing all the further information I'm sure they'll release in the coming weeks.

In other words: Nice!
